Sometimes a simple statement can clear away a whole page of confusion. I was reading Osho on Buddhism when he simply said that Buddhism sees God as law while Christianity sees God as a person. So in the east God is impersonal while in the west He is personal. Unless these two views come together we get into trouble. Remember Star Wars? Luke Skywalker was being taught to feel the force, to sense the force behind him and through him, and to become the force. The force is the universal law that Buddha points to. It’s very scientific.
This is one of the reasons the west is taking to Buddhism. It’s the law, stupid. You either get with it, or you wipe out. You can’t surf a big wave without becoming the wave, you can’t be Michael Jordan without becoming the basketball and the court, and you can’t play beautiful music without becoming the music. Nothing personal about it. The music isn’t a person, the basketball isn’t a person, and the ocean wave isn’t a person. It is just our choice whether we learn to ride the law of the wave or not. Life in this perspective is just learning how to balance oneself on the rolling wave of the moment. Life is falling off and getting back on. No sin or guilt, no problem at all, really. There is no fear in learning how to play or surf because you can’t balance with fear shaking your legs. Dropping fear is how we learn how to balance. Dropping fear is learning how to trust that the universe is also safety net. Because the law is one, the law has compassion for those who know it and those who don’t. How do we know when we are balancing on the law? When we have compassion for others.
So God and the Law are just here, like the sun and the earth and the whole universe are just here, waiting….no, not waiting, because the Law or the Dharma or the Force or the Tao is already complete and needs nothing to wait for. But we humans are not really separated from the Law. We have not really been cast out of the Garden. We are the Law becoming conscious, becoming a person. When we become the law, the force, the Tao and the Dharma, we are the Personhood of God. God is a person and He is us. As my old guru used to say, “God dwells within you as you.” Here is where East meets West and Buddha meets Christ.
