Yoga is Balance

My wife said she thought defining yoga as balance in life was better than trying to explain what yoga as “union” means. Union with what? The mind is left to fill in the blanks. Some think yoga is union with the devil?

So balance is better. Who wouldn’t want balance in their life? And balance is a very deep word; once you start the inquiry you never come to the bottom of it unless you give up thinking. A tightrope walker high over the street on a wire can’t think about his next step or he loses his balance. His existence is just one step at a time, and all his awareness is concentrated into the present moment. He is just totally here. If his mind even hints of going there, he loses his balance and falls.

So once we start fine-tuning our balance, first starting with the physical body and breath, then the mind, we will eventually come to yoga, and we will discover that we are free, and no effort is required.

If we make any effort to be free, guess what—we lose our balance.
