Last night we had dinner with some friends who had cut the tether to the rock that holds our western culture together: the personal ownership of land—that house in the suburbs with a white picket fence with good neighbors, a green lawn and a two car garage.
They are among the growing herd of baby boomers that are selling their homes and giving away their stuff to live full-time in an RV. Connected by the Internet and satellite TV, they roam the country like gypsies or the nomadic Native Americans tribes our culture displaced, staying here, going there as the wind of their whims directs.
Renouncing one’s ties to property and living without thought for tomorrow’s real estate taxes seems to be a reflection of the spiritual awakening that is going on in the world. Being free to move at a moment’s notice, letting go of attachments, and making enjoyment of the present moment the purpose of life is the way life was designed to be lived.
Man has lived for hundreds of thousands of years as free nomads—until agriculture, civilization and the culture of property ownership shaped the minds of men. With property comes class, and with class comes the hierarchy of power and the rule of the few over the many. Now this mind dominated culture has divided up the earth with its fences until our free earth has been reduced to a few protected parks.
When man gave up his freedom to roam the earth, he gave up his soul for a conditioned ego that is bound by time and the fear of losing its attachments. As Jesus said, The Son of Man has no place to rest his head. Of course, Jesus has never seen an RV.
With this deep longing for freedom embedded in our soul, one can see why life in an RV is so appealing to the generation that was the first to cut the cord to its parent culture back in the 60’s. As they enter their retirement driving RVs, they are singing: Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, free at last.
